Ohio and U.S. Employment Situation (Seasonally Adjusted)

Ohio's unemployment rate was 6.6 percent in June, up from 6.3 percent in May, according to data released this morning by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. Ohio's nonfarm wage and salary employment increased 7,900 over the month, from 5,416,800 in May, to 5,424,700 in June.

"Workers continued to enter the labor force in June at a rate greater than the actual hiring demand," said ODJFS Director Helen Jones-Kelley. "Again this month, the increase in the unemployment rate was coupled with a rise in employment."

The number of workers unemployed in Ohio in June was 393,000, up from 380,000 in May. The number of unemployed has increased by 52,000 in the past 12 months from 341,000. The June unemployment rate for Ohio was up from 5.7 percent in June 2007.

The U.S. unemployment rate for June was 5.5 percent, unchanged from May.

Ohio's nonfarm payroll employment, at 5,424,700 in June, was up 7,900 from May, according to the latest business establishment survey conducted by ODJFS.

Service-providing industries rose 6,400 to 4,430,500. Leisure and hospitality and government each added 2,900 jobs. Also up were trade, transportation, and utilities (+1,400), other services (+1,200), and professional and business services (+100). Educational and health services dropped 1,200 from May. Small declines were noted in financial activities (-600) and information (-300). Goods-producing industries rose 1,500 to 994,200. Gains in durable goods boosted manufacturing 1,600, while natural resources and mining added 100 jobs. Construction was down 200 over the month.

Over the past 12 months, nonagricultural wage and salary employment was down 9,900. Goods-producing industries had a loss of 17,100 jobs. A decline of 9,100 in durable goods helped lower manufacturing 11,700. Employment in construction dropped 5,900. Natural resources and mining was up 500. Service-providing industries rose 7,200 from June 2007. Educational and health services advanced 11,200. Smaller increases occurred in professional and business services (+800), financial activities (+200), and leisure and hospitality (+200). Other services dropped 2,200 over the year. Also down were information (-2,000) and trade, transportation, and utilities (-1,000). Government was virtually unchanged over the year.
