Ohio and U.S. Employment Situation (Seasonally Adjusted)

Ohio's unemployment rate was 5.8 percent in July, down from 6.1 percent in June, according to data released this morning by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. Ohio's nonfarm wage and salary employment decreased 8,400 over the month, from 5,442,700 in June, to 5,434,300 in July.

"The labor market data showed mixed results in July," ODJFS Director Helen Jones-Kelley said. "Although the unemployment rate declined in July, overall employment also declined."

The number of workers unemployed in Ohio in July was 344,000, down from 363,000 in June. The number of unemployed has increased by 14,000 in the past 12 months from 330,000. The July unemployment rate for Ohio was up from 5.6 percent in July 2006.

The U.S. unemployment rate for July was 4.6 percent, up slightly from the June rate of 4.5 percent.

Total Nonagricultural Wage and Salary Employment (Seasonally Adjusted)

Ohio's nonfarm wage and salary employment fell 8,400 over the month, from 5,442,700 in June to 5,434,300 in July, according to the latest business establishment survey conducted by ODJFS.

Employment among service providers, at 4,415,000, was down 4,700 during the period. The largest decline was in leisure and hospitality (-3,400) as accommodation and food services dropped 2,700. A reduction in state government helped lower government employment 1,500. Also down were trade, transportation and utilities (-1,000), information (-100), financial activities (-100), and educational and health services (-100). Increases were noted in professional and business services (+800) and other services (+700). Goods-producing industries dropped 3,700 to 1,019,300. Manufacturing was down 2,400, while construction lost 1,300 jobs. Natural resources and mining was virtually unchanged.

Over the past 12 months, nonfarm payroll employment fell 1,600. Goods-producing industries were 17,400 lower. Manufacturing declined 17,600 due to a loss of 15,300 in durable goods. Natural resources and mining slipped 200, while construction was up 400. Service-providing industries rose 15,800 over the year. The largest increases were in educational and health services (+11,900) and professional and business services (+8,700). Other services advanced 1,700 and trade, transportation, and utilities added 1,000 jobs. Financial activities dropped 3,400 over the year. Also down were government (-1,700), leisure and hospitality (-1,400), and information (-1,000).
